The Nigerian government says it has completed 23 solar-powered mini-grid projects that are now supplying electricity to about 50,000 people, as part of efforts to expand energy access and reduce reliance on the country’s overstretched national grid.

The Federal Government announced that the projects were developed to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to underserved and off-grid communities, where millions of Nigerians continue to face limited or no access to power.

Officials described the initiative as a key milestone in the country’s broader energy transition strategy, saying the deployment of solar mini-grids is intended to complement the national electricity network while accelerating rural electrification across the country.

The government added that expanding renewable energy infrastructure remains central to its plan to bridge Nigeria’s electricity access gap, improve livelihoods, stimulate economic activities and support small businesses in communities that have long struggled with unreliable power supply.

The completion of the 23 mini-grid projects marks another step in Nigeria’s push to diversify its energy mix through clean and decentralised power solutions, while extending electricity to thousands of households beyond the reach of the national grid.
