Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has urged the Ekiti Council of Elders to play a crucial role in moderating political activities ahead of the June 20, 2026 governorship election. He emphasised the importance of their wise counsel to foster peace and stability during the election period.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Board of Trustees for the Prof Joseph Oluwasanmi Wellness Centre in Ado Ekiti, the governor, represented by his Deputy Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, praised the council’s patriotism and ongoing contributions to Ekiti’s development. “We will be relying heavily on your wisdom so that the political parties and their gladiators can play by the rules and uphold peace and civility,” Oyebanji said.
He paid tribute to the council’s president, Prof Joseph Oluwasanmi, describing him as “a thoroughbred academic colossus” whose achievements have brought honour to Ekiti and Nigeria as a whole. “Prof Oluwasanmi remains one of those citizens that gave Ekiti the name ‘Fountain of Knowledge.’ We wish him sound health and long life,” the governor added.
Oyebanji reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, stating: “Our style will endure and become more entrenched with elders joining us to run a government where all citizens can contribute meaningfully.”
In response, the council commended the governor’s prudent and accommodating leadership style, which they said has laid a strong foundation for peace and harmony in the state. Senior council members including Prof Oluwasanmi and Chief Deji Fasuan highlighted the government’s promotion of gender equality and inclusivity as a significant achievement.
Addressing social issues, the elders called for reforms in education to integrate skills development, moral values, and entrepreneurship to tackle unemployment.
The council also expressed prayers and goodwill for the success of Governor Oyebanji’s administration, noting that his governance approach sets a positive example for future leaders.
