This morning, X (formerly Twitter) formally notified me of a disturbing threat letter issued by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) over a Tweet I posted about President Bola Tinubu. Let me be clear: deleting that Tweet is not an option I will ever consider. Thank you, @X, for standing your ground.
In its message, X confirmed it had received a legal request from the DSS, claiming that content on my account, @YeleSowore, violated Nigerian law.
“We have not taken any action on the reported content at this time,” the platform stated.
X reiterated its policy of defending free expression and respecting the voices of its users, noting that it always informs account holders whenever governments or law enforcement agencies demand content removal.
The platform further advised that while it cannot provide legal counsel, users facing such requests may choose to challenge them in court, seek advice from civil society groups, or voluntarily delete the content.
By notifying me, X has once again underscored the importance of transparency and the defence of digital free speech against attempts at intimidation.
