Former National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sunday Udeh-Okoye, has hinted that another Southeast state is on the verge of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), signalling a deepening political realignment in the region.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme monitored by Observers Times on Tuesday, Udeh-Okoye said the momentum of the APC in the Southeast had become “unstoppable,” following the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and other key PDP figures to the ruling party.
“Just wait and see; very soon, another state will fall in the South-East to the APC,” Udeh-Okoye stated, declining to name the state, which he described as “classified information.”
Udeh-Okoye, who was among those who joined Governor Mbah in defecting to the APC earlier on Tuesday, maintained that the series of defections was not aimed at destroying the opposition but rather a result of internal crises and leadership failure within the PDP.
According to him, “This is not about crushing the PDP; it’s about leadership and management failure. People are leaving because the party has lost direction and cohesion.”
Governor Mbah’s defection was formally received by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, and other party leaders in Abuja.
The Southeast geopolitical zone currently comprises five states: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. The APC now controls Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu States, while Anambra remains under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Abia under the Labour Party (LP).
