A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has expressed surprise over the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as unexpected despite several efforts by party elders to keep him within the fold.
Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, the PDP stalwart admitted that the development caught him off guard, noting that internal consultations had been ongoing to prevent such defections.
“I never saw it coming. In fact, when Anyanwu was reinstated as secretary to complete his assignment, he even instructed his people not to attend meetings,” George said.
According to reports, Governor Mbah officially confirmed his departure from the PDP on Tuesday, joining a growing list of political figures from the South-East who have switched allegiance to the ruling APC.
Despite the wave of defections, Bode George maintained that the PDP remains resilient and focused on rebuilding its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stated that while the party regrets losing Mbah, it is confident in its grassroots base and will continue to uphold its democratic values.
“People may leave, but the PDP’s foundation is solid. We have been through challenges before, and we will overcome this phase,” he emphasised.
Governor Mbah’s move comes amid reports of intensified political realignments in the South-East, where the APC now controls Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi States.
