Electricity supply to parts of Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, has been disrupted after alleged land grabbers invaded and encroached on a key power facility operated by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
The disruption has affected Maitama District and neighbouring communities, one of the city’s most prominent residential and diplomatic areas, following the reported interference with the AEDC Maitama substation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the electricity company said the encroachment created operational challenges at the facility, forcing the company to take measures to safeguard its infrastructure and personnel.
AEDC said the development prompted the intervention of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who was briefed on the situation and moved to address the dispute surrounding the substation.
The company did not disclose the duration of the blackout or provide a specific timeline for restoration of power but assured residents that efforts were underway to resolve the issue and restore normal electricity supply.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the increasing threat posed by illegal land activities to critical infrastructure in the capital, with authorities warning that encroachment on public assets could disrupt essential services.
The FCT administration is expected to work with relevant agencies to resolve the dispute and prevent further interference with power facilities serving residents of Abuja.
