Several Spanish media outlets reported on Monday that Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to take over as the manager of the Brazilian national team.
The veteran Italian manager has one year remaining on his contract with the Spanish giants. However, following Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final elimination by Arsenal and their Copa del Rey defeat at the hands of rivals Barcelona, his departure from the Santiago Bernabeu appears imminent.
Ancelotti himself acknowledged the possibility of an exit, stating after Saturday’s defeat by Barcelona that his future was “a topic for the next weeks.”
According to Spanish media reports, Ancelotti is expected to assume his role with Brazil prior to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June. This timeline would mean his departure from Real Madrid before the Club World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States this summer.
Brazil dismissed Dorival Junior in March after a heavy 4-1 defeat against Argentina. The Seleção currently sit fourth in the South American qualifying table for the World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the US, Mexico, and Canada.
Ancelotti enjoyed significant success with Real Madrid, leading them to a Champions League and La Liga double last season. Brazilian stars Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes were key players in his squad. He is considered one of the most accomplished coaches in the club’s history.
During his first tenure at Real Madrid, Ancelotti guided them to “La Decima,” their tenth Champions League title. Across his two spells with Los Blancos, he has won the Champions League three times. He returned to the club in 2021 after Zinedine Zidane’s resignation, following a previous dismissal in 2015.
This season, Real Madrid have displayed defensive vulnerabilities and currently trail La Liga leaders Barcelona by four points. Defending their league title remains their only realistic chance of securing major silverware this campaign.
Ancelotti’s extensive coaching career also includes stints at AC Milan, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain, among other prominent clubs.
