The Confédération Africaine de Football has ripped the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title away from Senegal and handed it to Morocco.

On Tuesday the CAF Appeal Board ruled that the Teranga Lions forfeited the final by walking off the pitch, awarded Morocco a 3-0 win and crowned the Atlas Lions champions.

Morocco’s federation had appealed the disciplinary board’s earlier dismissal of its complaint that Senegal breached Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations when the team left the field.

Article 82 is blunt: if a team “refuses to play or leaves the ground before the regular end of the Match without the authorisation of the referee,” it is “considered the loser and shall be eliminated for good from the current competition.”

Article 84 adds the scoreline: the offending team “will lose its Match by 3-0 unless the opponent has scored a more advantageous result at the time when the Match was interrupted.”

The appeal board agreed.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (‘CAF’) Appeal Board decided today that in application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match… with the result… recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF),” the statement said.

It added that Senegal’s walkout “infringed Article 82” and that the FRMF protest is upheld.

The final had descended into chaos after the referee, following a VAR review, awarded Morocco a stoppage-time penalty.
