Nigeria’s National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has officially zoned its presidential ticket to the South ahead of the 2027 elections, declaring that the position will remain in the region for a single four-year term before rotating to the North in 2031.
The announcement was made during the party’s National Convention on Saturday, in what analysts describe as an early attempt to manage internal power balancing and regional interests ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Party leaders said the arrangement reflects a commitment to inclusiveness, equity and national cohesion, as debates over power rotation continue to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape.
The decision is expected to shape coalition talks and succession calculations within opposition circles, particularly as political actors intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential race.
Observers say the move could strengthen the NDC’s appeal in parts of the country where demands for rotational leadership remain a defining political issue.
