At least 248 passengers narrowly escaped tragedy on Friday night when a Qatar Airways aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos following a technical fault mid-flight.

According to airport sources, the aircraft experienced a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff, prompting the pilot to return to Lagos for an urgent landing. All passengers and crew were reported safe, with no casualties or serious injuries.

A statement from Qatar Airways confirmed the incident, describing it as a precautionary measure taken “in line with standard safety protocols.” The airline said technical teams are investigating the fault to ensure future flights remain unaffected.

Eyewitnesses at the airport described tense moments as emergency services were on standby, ready to respond to any eventuality. “It was a frightening experience,” said one passenger who declined to be named. “But the crew stayed calm and professional, which reassured everyone on board.”

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reportedly launched an inquiry into the incident, underlining the importance of safety oversight in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

This incident adds to growing concerns over airline safety in the region, although aviation experts note that emergency landings are relatively rare and often a sign of strict adherence to safety protocols.

Passengers affected by the disruption are reportedly being accommodated on alternative flights while investigations continue.
