Former Abia State governor and serving senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Abia State, vowing to challenge incumbent governor Alex Otti in what is shaping up to be a high-stakes political battle.
Kalu made the declaration during an interaction with journalists, stating unequivocally that he would return to the governorship race if called upon by his supporters and political associates. He said the decision was driven by what he described as a growing demand from stakeholders across the state who believe he remains best placed to reposition Abia for accelerated development.
“Politics is about the people,” Kalu said. “If Abians ask me to serve again, I will not hesitate. I am ready to offer my experience and leadership to move the state forward.”
The former governor, who led Abia between 1999 and 2007, said he was currently consulting widely and engaging grassroots leaders ahead of a formal declaration. He stressed that his focus would be on economic revival, infrastructure renewal and job creation, should he secure his party’s ticket.
Kalu also criticised what he described as slow governance under the current administration, arguing that Abia requires decisive leadership to unlock its commercial potential and improve living standards.
Governor Otti, elected in 2023 on a reformist platform, has yet to respond officially to Kalu’s comments. However, political observers say a Kalu–Otti contest would significantly reshape Abia’s political landscape, setting the stage for one of the most closely watched governorship races in the South-East.
As consultations intensify and political camps begin to mobilise, attention is now firmly fixed on 2027 — with Abia poised for a fiercely contested election that could redefine its future.
