Nigeria’s New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) says it is open to forming a broad political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, adding that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is not automatically guaranteed its presidential ticket.
Speaking in an interview shared by Politics Nigeria, senior party officials said the NNPP is currently reassessing its internal structures and political strategy as part of a wider plan to expand its national influence. The party noted that conversations are underway with several opposition blocs seeking to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
According to the officials, while Kwankwaso remains a central figure in the NNPP and retains a strong support base, the party will follow a transparent nomination process. “No one has been promised the ticket,” one official said, stressing that the party’s priority is choosing the candidate most capable of winning a national election.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and influential northern politician, finished fourth in the 2023 presidential race but has maintained visibility through political outreach and public commentary.
Analysts say the NNPP’s move signals an attempt to avoid internal fractures and broaden its appeal across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. A coalition with other opposition groups could reshape the electoral map, though it remains unclear which parties the NNPP is in talks with.
The party is expected to announce its formal roadmap for 2027 in the coming months.
