A retired female judge has been found murdered in her home in Delta State, Nigerian authorities confirmed on Monday, sparking outrage and renewed calls for stronger protections for members of the judiciary.
Police say the body of the retired jurist—whose name is being withheld until her family is formally notified—was discovered over the weekend after neighbours reported unusual silence and raised concerns. Officers arrived at the residence to find signs of forced entry, suggesting the killing may have been premeditated.
Delta State police spokesperson said an investigation has been launched, with homicide detectives deployed to the scene. “We are treating this as a case of murder. No arrests have been made yet, but we are following several leads,” the spokesperson said.
The incident has triggered widespread shock among legal professionals and rights advocates, who describe the killing as a troubling escalation of violence targeting public officials. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) called for an urgent, transparent investigation, warning that attacks on members of the judiciary pose a threat to the rule of law.
Local residents say the retired judge was known for her calm demeanour and commitment to justice during her years on the bench.
Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward as the investigation continues.
