The governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, says his administration has avoided taking fresh loans since assuming office, citing concerns over the state’s financial capacity and long-term fiscal sustainability.

“Since we came in as government, we have not taken any new loan because we believe we do not have the fiscal strength to borrow any money,” the governor said while speaking on the management of state finances.

The remarks come amid growing scrutiny of public debt levels across Nigerian states, many of which continue to grapple with rising expenditure, shrinking revenues and mounting economic pressures.

Sani said his administration’s approach is aimed at prioritising prudent financial management and reducing dependence on borrowing, as governments across the country face increasing demands for infrastructure, salaries and social services.

Analysts say the governor’s stance reflects a broader debate within Nigeria over debt sustainability and whether state governments should continue relying on loans to fund development projects in an uncertain economic climate.
