Former Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has drawn parallels between his emerging alliance with Peter Obi and historic political collaborations that shaped Nigeria’s early post-independence and Second Republic eras.

Speaking on the significance of the partnership, Kwankwaso said the alliance reflects a return to the style of inclusive political cooperation once championed by Nigeria’s founding leaders.

“Now we’re going back to what Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello did during their time, and in the Second Republic, what Shehu Shagari and others did with the leadership of the South East,” he said.

The remarks are likely to fuel speculation over a broader opposition coalition ahead of future elections, as political actors continue to explore alliances capable of reshaping Nigeria’s electoral landscape.

Analysts say the reference to past North-South political cooperation signals an attempt to frame the alliance as one rooted in national unity and cross-regional consensus, rather than narrow partisan interests.

While details of the partnership remain unclear, the growing alignment between the two influential figures is already generating debate across Nigeria’s political spectrum.
