At least 21 people have been confirmed dead and dozens more injured following a devastating train collision in Spain, triggering a large-scale emergency response and plunging the country into mourning.

The crash occurred when two trains collided on the same line under circumstances that were still being investigated by authorities as of press time. Emergency services were swiftly deployed to the scene, with ambulances, firefighters and rescue teams working for hours to evacuate survivors and recover victims from the wreckage.

Spain’s transport authorities said several of the injured were receiving treatment in nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition. Hospitals in the region were placed on high alert as medical personnel raced to provide urgent care.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic, as damaged carriages lay twisted along the tracks and passengers struggled to escape. Rescue workers were seen cutting through metal to reach those trapped inside the trains.

The Spanish government has expressed condolences to the families of the victims, while senior officials pledged a full investigation to determine the cause of the collision. Rail services on the affected route were suspended as safety inspections and preliminary inquiries got underway.

The incident ranks among the deadliest rail accidents in Spain in recent years and has renewed concerns over rail safety, signalling systems and operational protocols on the country’s transport network.
