The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister has cautioned the United States President that imposing tariffs on Nato allies over issues linked to Greenland would undermine national sovereignty, weaken Arctic security and fracture alliance unity.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, the Prime Minister made the position clear during recent high-level engagements with Washington, stressing that economic pressure on allied nations contradicts the collective principles on which Nato is founded.

The UK leader argued that Greenland, a strategically important Arctic territory under Denmark, sits at the heart of shared security interests among Nato members. Any trade measures targeting allies in relation to the region, he said, risk escalating tensions at a time when cooperation in the Arctic is increasingly vital due to rising geopolitical competition and climate-driven changes.

He further emphasised that Nato’s strength lies in solidarity and mutual respect, warning that unilateral tariff actions could erode trust among member states and embolden rival powers seeking to exploit divisions within the alliance.

British officials said the Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Nato’s collective defence and to safeguarding Arctic stability through diplomacy and cooperation rather than economic coercion.

The remarks come amid broader transatlantic discussions on trade, security and burden-sharing, with European leaders urging Washington to align economic policies with shared strategic objectives to preserve unity within the Western alliance.
