President Bola Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on his longtime associate, Gilbert Chagoury, in recognition of his decades-long support and contributions to national development.
The honour was announced on Monday and is one of Nigeria’s most prestigious national awards, ranking second only to the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR). It is typically bestowed on individuals who have made significant contributions to the country’s growth and public life.
Chagoury, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, is widely known for his close association with President Tinubu spanning several decades. He has been involved in various private-sector initiatives and charitable activities, particularly in infrastructure development, education and healthcare.
Although details of the award ceremony were not immediately disclosed, the conferment underscores Tinubu’s recognition of loyalty, long-standing partnership and service to national progress.
The development has sparked reactions across political and business circles, with supporters describing the honour as well deserved, while critics argue that national awards should prioritise public office holders and frontline public servants.
The GCON has previously been awarded to former vice presidents, senior statesmen and notable Nigerians whose influence and service have had a lasting impact on the country.
