the Federal Government is poised to bring five suspects—Idris Omeiza, Al-Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar—to trial for the horrific June 5, 2022, attack on Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State. The accused will face justice before Mr Justice Obiorah Egwatu at the Federal High Court in Abuja, charged with nine counts of terrorism-related offences.
This long-awaited arraignment comes three years after General Lucky Irabor, the then Chief of Defence Staff, announced the suspects’ arrest. The National Security Council previously linked the brutal assault to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The devastating attack saw over 40 worshippers tragically killed and many others injured when assailants stormed the church during a Sunday Mass, unleashing a hail of bullets on the congregation.
