Tottenham Hotspur grabbed bragging rights in a narrow 1–0 win over North London rivals Arsenal during a tense preseason clash on Thursday.

The only goal of the match came just before half-time. Pape Matar Sarr finished neatly in the 45th minute, handing Spurs the lead after a cautious first half from both sides.

Despite efforts from both teams to level or extend the scoreline, the second half produced little by way of clear chances. Arsenal struggled to break down a well-organised Spurs defence, while Tottenham held firm to protect their slender advantage.

Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur went into the referee’s book in the 36th minute, while late tackles saw Arsenal’s Mikel Merino and Spurs winger Brennan Johnson also receive yellow cards during stoppage time.

The match, played in front of a lively crowd, served as a key fitness test ahead of the upcoming season. Both coaches used the game to rotate players and test new tactical setups.

“It’s always good to win against Arsenal,” one Tottenham player told reporters after the match. “But more importantly, we’re building towards the new season with confidence.”

For Arsenal, it was a frustrating evening, but not without positives. “It’s still preparation,” a member of the Gunners’ coaching staff said. “We’re working on sharpness and structure, and we’ve got time to get it right.”

Although no points were at stake, the derby intensity was unmistakable. Spurs fans will be pleased to carry the early season momentum, while Arsenal will look to fine-tune their squad before competitive fixtures begin.
