The son of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who was recently killed by armed bandits in Katsina State, has publicly questioned the state government over the circumstances surrounding the retrieval of his father’s body from the attackers.
Speaking after news of the general’s burial emerged, the deceased’s son said many people had approached him seeking answers about how the corpse was recovered after reports that his father had been abducted and killed by bandits.
“Many people saw the announcement that the funeral prayer would be held at six o’clock. People then asked me, ‘How was the corpse brought back?’ I replied that…” he said, trailing off as he recounted the questions surrounding the recovery of his father’s remains.
His remarks have intensified public interest in the events leading to the retrieval of the retired military officer’s body, with many Nigerians calling for greater transparency from the authorities over the operation.
The Katsina State Government has yet to publicly explain the circumstances under which the body was recovered or whether negotiations, security operations or other measures led to its release.
The killing of the retired general has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of north-west Nigeria, where armed gangs continue to carry out kidnappings, killings and attacks on communities despite ongoing military operations.
Security analysts say the incident underscores the persistent threat posed by bandit groups operating across the region and the urgent need for more effective measures to tackle insecurity.
