Nigeria’s diaspora agency has called on its nationals in South Africa to close their businesses and prioritise their safety as xenophobic attacks intensify in parts of the country.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) issued the advisory amid a surge in anti-foreigner protests, where demonstrators have reportedly targeted foreign-owned shops and demanded the expulsion of non-nationals.
In its warning, NiDCOM urged Nigerians to avoid confrontations and limit movement in affected areas, citing growing concerns over the safety of migrants caught in the unrest.
The latest wave of violence highlights longstanding tensions in South Africa, where periodic outbreaks of xenophobia have seen foreign nationals blamed for economic hardships, including unemployment and crime.
Authorities in South Africa have yet to issue a comprehensive response to the recent incidents, as fears mount among migrant communities over potential escalation.
NiDCOM said it continues to monitor the situation closely and is engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure the protection of Nigerian citizens.
