The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise tackling Nigeria’s worsening insecurity rather than focusing on political battles ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, criticised the President’s recent declaration that he was ready to “fight to the finish” politically, arguing that such determination should instead be directed at combating terrorism, banditry and other security threats facing the country.
According to the opposition party, Nigerians elected Tinubu to restore peace, protect lives and address the country’s deepening security crisis—not to wage political wars against his opponents.
The ADC said the President’s remarks were ill-timed, particularly as communities across several parts of the country continue to grapple with violent attacks, kidnappings and killings.
“The President should be reflecting on his administration’s security record and taking decisive steps to end the bloodshed, rather than speaking about political fights ahead of an election that is still years away,” the statement said.
The party maintained that the government’s primary responsibility remains the protection of citizens, stressing that the worsening security situation requires urgent attention and coordinated action.
ADC further argued that millions of Nigerians are more concerned about their safety, livelihoods and the rising cost of living than political rhetoric surrounding the next electoral cycle.
It urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts against insurgency, banditry and other forms of criminality while delivering on its campaign promises to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
President Tinubu’s remarks have continued to generate reactions from opposition figures and political stakeholders, with critics accusing the administration of shifting attention to political manoeuvring instead of governance.
The Presidency has yet to issue a formal response to the ADC’s latest statement.
