Qatar has barred Nigerian men from travelling alone to the Gulf state under new visa restrictions introduced by its Ministry of Interior.

The policy, which came into effect on 5 September 2025, prevents Nigerian men from securing tourist or transit visas unless accompanied by family. Only women and families are now eligible to apply, while solo male travellers have been cut off.

Industry sources and travel agencies confirmed that the restrictions apply immediately to both new and pending applications. Additional conditions include mandatory booking of return transfers and proof of accommodation in five-star hotels before visas can be issued.

Authorities in Doha say the move is aimed at curbing visa overstays. But in Nigeria, the decision has sparked concern that it will disrupt business travel, academic mobility, and family connections, while straining relations between both countries.

For many Nigerian business executives, students, and frequent flyers who use Doha as a transit hub to Asia and Europe, the restrictions are a major setback. Independent travel for men has effectively been blocked, raising travel costs and limiting opportunities.

“This will affect many Nigerians who rely on Qatar Airways as a gateway to Asia or Europe,” one travel consultant warned.

The latest rules are not without precedent. In 2019, former Senate President Bukola Saraki appealed to Qatar to ease entry barriers for Nigerians, while in 2023, then Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika pressed for a fairer visa system.

However, analysts say the new policy represents an even tougher stance, targeting Nigerian men more directly than ever before.
