Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi says he has deliberately avoided owning property in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, in order to reduce personal stress and minimise distractions.

Speaking in a recent interaction, Obi explained that the decision was a conscious lifestyle choice rather than a financial limitation, stressing that Abuja’s political and social pressures can be overwhelming.

According to him, owning property in the federal capital often comes with constant demands, unplanned visits and expectations that can take a toll on personal well-being and focus.

“I deliberately avoid owning property in Abuja to reduce distractions and personal stress,” Obi was quoted as saying.

The former governor, known for promoting modest living and fiscal discipline, said he prefers to maintain a simple lifestyle that allows him to concentrate on issues he considers more productive and impactful.

Obi’s remarks have reignited public debate about political culture in Abuja, where access, influence and proximity to power often blur the lines between public duty and private life.

Supporters have praised his stance as consistent with his long-standing message of prudence and personal restraint, while others see it as a critique of the excesses associated with life in the nation’s capital.
