The Odua People’s Assembly (OPA) has strongly rejected allegations that Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, authorises arbitrary arrests, describing the claims as unfounded and potentially damaging to public confidence in the country’s security architecture.

In a statement issued on Friday, the group said the accusations were “reckless and misleading”, warning that such narratives could erode trust in law enforcement agencies and distract from ongoing efforts to strengthen national security.

The OPA stressed that Ribadu, a former anti-corruption chief with decades of experience in public service, has consistently operated within the bounds of the law, working with relevant agencies to tackle terrorism, banditry and other forms of organised crime.

“Spreading unverified claims against the Office of the National Security Adviser only serves to weaken public trust and embolden criminal elements,” the organisation said. “Security operations in Nigeria follow due process, and no individual, regardless of position, conducts arrests in isolation.”

The group urged critics to channel grievances through appropriate legal and institutional mechanisms rather than resorting to what it termed “trial by social media”.

OPA also called on citizens to support ongoing security reforms, noting that collaboration between the government and the public remains critical to restoring peace and stability across the country.

Reaffirming its confidence in Ribadu’s leadership, the assembly encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant, avoid misinformation and stand behind institutions tasked with safeguarding lives and property.

“The fight against insecurity requires unity and responsibility from all stakeholders,” the statement added. “Baseless accusations only set the nation back.”
