Veteran journalist and politician Dele Momodu has claimed that he personally appealed to Peter Obi to join forces with Atiku Abubakar ahead of Nigeria’s presidential election, but the former Labour Party candidate declined, insisting he enjoyed greater popularity.

Speaking during an interview, Momodu said he made several attempts to persuade Obi that a united opposition stood a stronger chance of defeating the ruling party. However, according to him, Obi maintained that his nationwide appeal surpassed that of Atiku.

“I begged Peter Obi to work with Atiku, but he told me he was more popular than Atiku,” Momodu said.

The media publisher argued that the inability of key opposition figures to reach a political compromise weakened their collective chances at the polls, describing unity as essential for mounting a formidable electoral challenge.

Momodu’s remarks are likely to reignite debate over the opposition’s strategy during the 2023 presidential election and the prospects of future political alliances ahead of the next electoral cycle.
