The northern political bloc is at a crossroads ahead of the 2027 Nigerian presidential election, weighing options among five prominent candidates: President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Key northern stakeholders are wary of endorsing a northerner, fearing it could disrupt the North-South power rotation and destabilise the nation. Instead, some are seeking a southern candidate committed to a single term, ensuring power returns north by 2031. Tinubu and Jonathan, limited to four years, are top contenders, while Obi and Amaechi, who could seek re-election, have pledged one-term presidencies—a promise met with scepticism.

Tinubu’s Mixed Record

Tinubu, who secured 8.79 million votes in 2023, largely from the north, faces criticism for allegedly marginalising the region in appointments and infrastructure. His supporters, including northern governors and SGF George Akume, defend his record, claiming it surpasses that of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Recent engagements in Kaduna aimed to address northern grievances, with Tinubu potentially aligning with former Kano Governor Musa Kwankwaso to bolster support.

Jonathan’s Rising Appeal

Jonathan is gaining traction among northern power brokers, valued for his 2015 concession to Buhari and perceived stable leadership. Despite eligibility debates, PDP leaders are rallying behind him, citing nostalgia for his democratic era.

Obi and Amaechi’s Pledges

Obi, who won 11 states in 2023, and Amaechi, with strong northern ties from his tenure as Transport Minister, remain viable options. Both are linked to the ADC coalition alongside Atiku, aiming to challenge Tinubu’s APC. However, their one-term promises face doubts.

Atiku’s Persistent Bid

Atiku, now with the ADC after leaving PDP, continues his decades-long presidential quest. His 2023 North-East win shows strength, but capturing broader northern and southern votes remains a challenge.
