Nigerian nationals living in South Africa remain largely safe despite growing concerns over xenophobic tensions, according to Nigeria’s diplomatic mission.

The Nigerian envoy in South Africa has reassured citizens that there is no immediate cause for panic, even as reports of anti-foreigner sentiments continue to surface in parts of the country. Speaking on the situation, the envoy acknowledged the underlying tensions but emphasised that there have been no widespread or targeted attacks against Nigerians in recent times.

“We are closely monitoring developments and maintaining active engagement with South African authorities to ensure the safety of our citizens,” the envoy said, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and law-abiding.

Xenophobia has long strained relations between locals and foreign nationals in South Africa, with previous outbreaks leading to violence, displacement, and diplomatic friction across the continent. However, officials say the current climate, while tense, has not escalated to the levels seen in past incidents.

Community leaders have also called for calm, encouraging dialogue and peaceful coexistence, while warning against the spread of misinformation that could inflame the situation further.

The Nigerian government, through its mission, has reiterated its commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and has advised Nigerians in South Africa to stay informed, avoid high-risk areas, and report any threats to authorities promptly.

While concerns linger, diplomatic channels remain active as both nations work to prevent a repeat of past crises.
