Nigeria’s Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge against former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, and several others over an alleged plot to wage war against the country.
The charges, lodged before a Federal High Court in Abuja, accuse Sylva alongside a retired Major General, a retired Naval Captain, a serving police inspector and three others of involvement in a conspiracy described by authorities as a coup attempt.
According to the filing, the defendants are alleged to have engaged in activities aimed at undermining national security, including plans to commit acts of terrorism and destabilise the government.
Details of the accusations remain limited, and it is unclear when the case will be heard in court. There has also been no immediate public response from Sylva or the other accused individuals regarding the charges.
The case marks a significant development in Nigeria’s security landscape, raising fresh concerns about alleged threats to constitutional order in Africa’s most populous nation.
