The Niger State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts to curb the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons across Nigeria.
The state government made the commitment during an engagement with the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), stressing the need for stronger collaboration among federal, state and community stakeholders to address the growing threat posed by illegal arms.
Officials said Niger State remained committed to initiatives aimed at preventing the circulation of illicit firearms and ammunition, which have contributed to insecurity and violent crime in parts of the country.
The government also pledged to strengthen cooperation with relevant security agencies and the NCCSALW in intelligence sharing, public awareness and other measures designed to tackle arms trafficking.
The NCCSALW has been working with state governments and other stakeholders to reduce the availability and circulation of illicit small arms and light weapons, which are often linked to armed violence and criminal activities.
The Niger State Government said sustained collaboration would be essential to achieving lasting peace and security, adding that it would continue to support initiatives that promote the safety and well-being of residents.
Authorities called for greater public cooperation, particularly in reporting suspicious activities and the illegal possession or movement of firearms to the appropriate security agencies.
