Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, reignited the age-old debate about wealth and happiness on Wednesday, affirming the long-held belief that money does not guarantee happiness.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO posted on social media: “Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about.” The statement quickly captured public attention, offering a rare personal reflection despite Musk’s immense fortune.

Within hours, the post amassed over 33 million views and 245,000 likes, sparking widespread discussion on whether financial security truly brings well-being.

In Nigeria, reactions drew parallels with Afrobeat singer Adekunle Gold’s 2021 hit, *It Is What It Is*, which includes the lyrics, “Money no dey bring happiness oh / Na when I get money I realise oh.” Both the post and the song convey a similar message—that wealth alone does not guarantee fulfillment.

Online opinions were divided. Some agreed with Musk, one user commenting, “Very true, money doesn’t buy happiness, but it makes misery a lot more comfortable!” Others stressed the emotional hardships caused by poverty. A popular reply stated, “Being broke while watching your mates win will buy you depression, envy, and sleepless nights for free.”

Musk’s perspective also drew skepticism given his extraordinary wealth, with one commenter quipping, “Only $1m will make my smile for 20 years straight.” Faith-based responses highlighted the belief that “Money answers all things but Jesus gives true happiness, fulfillment and satisfaction.”

This ongoing debate highlights a familiar divide—whether happiness stems from financial comfort, personal fulfillment, or something beyond money itself.
