Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said the U.S. midterm results present the world with “an opportunity now to unite around the cost of living.”
His remarks come as a major poll indicated that American voters viewed the economy as the defining issue in an election that delivered sweeping victories for the Democrats.
Speaking to reporters from the Commonwealth summit in Antigua and Barbuda, the Prime Minister noted that he has placed the cost of living “front and centre” of his premiership. However, he warned that those financial pressures cannot be fully alleviated until the conflict in the Middle East is resolved.
Burnham called for a de-escalation of the war involving Iran and demanded that the Strait of Hormuz be “fully opened once again.”
Interpreting the message from the U.S. public, he said: “Let’s get focused, in a laser-like way, on those cost of living issues.”
