The newly appointed Director General of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Abuh Mohammed, has marked his first week in office with a pledge to accelerate digital civil registration across Nigeria.
Demonstrating a hands-on leadership approach, Dr. Mohammed joined the NPC Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, and the Federal Commissioner for Plateau State (overseeing FCT), Hon. Mary Ishaya Afan, for a field inspection at Wuse General Hospital, Abuja. The visit was part of activities commemorating Africa Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Day.
During the exercise, the Director General observed the seamless integration of digital birth registration and the simultaneous issuance of National Identification Numbers (NINs) to newborns. He personally presented birth certificates and gifts to mothers, emphasizing that registration is a fundamental right.
“Birth registration is more than just a certificate; it is a child’s legal recognition and the foundation for accessing essential services,” Dr. Mohammed stated. He reaffirmed his commitment to building on the commission’s digital milestones to ensure no Nigerian child is left unregistered.
The DG’s first week signals a shift toward a more visible, digitally-driven administration focused on fulfilling the NPC’s core mandate of accurate data collection and identity management.
