The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave, with Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal set to oversee the affairs of the state during the governor’s absence.
The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers considered a letter from the governor notifying the Assembly of his planned leave in line with constitutional provisions.
According to the letter, the leave will commence on 10 August and end on 11 September 2026, while Governor Makinde is expected to resume official duties on 14 September. During the period, Deputy Governor Lawal will supervise the day-to-day administration of the state to ensure continuity in governance.
The Assembly unanimously endorsed the governor’s request, effectively authorising the temporary transfer of executive responsibilities to the deputy governor for the duration of the leave.
The move follows constitutional provisions requiring a governor to formally notify the state legislature before proceeding on leave and transferring executive authority to the deputy governor.
