The Senator representing Kogi West, Sunday Steve Karimi, has emphasized that terrorism in Nigeria transcends religious boundaries, asserting firmly that “terrorists have no religion.” Speaking on a private television program, Senator Karimi referenced recent deadly attacks on mosques in Zamfara and Katsina states to reinforce his point.

Senator Karimi condemned attempts by certain groups to misrepresent Nigeria internationally, attributing recent unrest to politically motivated efforts aimed at spreading insecurity. He assured that security agencies are actively investigating and exposing those responsible.

Highlighting the rising insecurity in Kogi West, where up to 30 people have been kidnapped within a week, Karimi outlined his commitment to enhancing security through legislative and community-based initiatives. He proposed the introduction of a National Emergency and Security Act designed to allocate 5% of national revenue towards security operations.

Karimi also stressed the vital role of strong local government administrations in combating insecurity, stressing that ineffective local governments contribute to the current challenges. He disclosed personal contributions to security infrastructure, including an operational base, vehicles, gunboats, and protective gear such as bulletproof jackets and helmets, all donated to security agencies in his district.

To bolster security in vulnerable areas, the Senator revealed ongoing collaboration with security agencies to deploy police and military personnel to at-risk schools. Moreover, he highlighted President Tinubu’s recent directive to withdraw security personnel from VIPs to strengthen ground operations.

Finally, Senator Karimi called for the establishment of state police units, pointing to successful models in other countries, and emphasized the importance of local government autonomy in fostering employment and community development.
