Former Minister of Interior and ex-Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has declared that his political loyalty is rooted in principles and causes rather than in individuals, in a statement that has sparked fresh debate within Nigeria’s political space.

Aregbesola made the remark while reflecting on his long-standing political journey and ideological beliefs, stressing that commitment to values must always take precedence over personal affiliations. According to him, sustainable political progress can only be achieved when loyalty is anchored to clearly defined causes that serve the collective interest.

“Where I come from, loyalty is to a cause, not in personalities,” the former governor said, underscoring his view that blind allegiance to individuals weakens institutions and undermines democratic growth.

Political observers interpret the statement as a reaffirmation of Aregbesola’s reformist posture, particularly at a time when internal realignments and ideological rifts continue to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. His comments come amid heightened tensions within political parties, where loyalty disputes and factional divisions have increasingly dominated public discourse.

Supporters argue that the position reflects principled leadership and ideological consistency, while critics see it as a subtle critique of personality-driven politics that has long characterised the nation’s governance structure.

Aregbesola, a key figure in progressive politics in the South-West, has repeatedly emphasised the need for issue-based engagement and institutional loyalty, insisting that political movements must outlive the individuals who lead them.

His latest remarks are expected to resonate widely, particularly among party faithfuls and political actors navigating shifting alliances ahead of future electoral contests.
