Yusuf Muhammadu Buhari, son of former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari, has announced plans to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, signalling early political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a visit to Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda at the Government House in Katsina, Yusuf Buhari said he intends to run for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The declaration came as part of a broader consultation with party leaders, traditional figures and community representatives from across the constituency, reflecting growing political activity in northern Nigeria as parties begin to position for 2027.
Members of the delegation described Buhari as a candidate capable of representing the interests of the constituency, citing his commitment to public service and youth-focused development. Musa Haro, a district head who led the group, said the aspiration aligns with what he called the “collective desire” for inclusive representation across Daura, Sandamu and Mai’adua.
Lawmakers and political figures present at the meeting also voiced support for the bid. Abdullahi Aliyu, a member of the House of Representatives, urged unity within the APC, while Fatihu Muhammad, a senior government official, framed the candidacy as part of a broader push to expand opportunities for young people and strengthen grassroots development.
Nigeria’s Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, welcomed the move, describing it as part of a wider trend of youth participation in governance.
In response, Governor Radda reiterated his administration’s commitment to internal democracy within the APC, calling for fairness, cohesion and peaceful engagement as political activities intensify. He advised the aspirant to consult widely and maintain integrity throughout the process.
The announcement highlights the early build-up to the 2027 elections, with consultations and alignments already under way within Nigeria’s ruling party, particularly in Katsina State, a key political stronghold.
