A community-based security network in Igboho, Oyo State, has rescued a woman and her son who were abducted by suspected kidnappers and taken across state lines into neighbouring Kwara State, highlighting growing concerns over cross-border insecurity in parts of southwestern Nigeria.

The victims were reportedly intercepted by armed assailants while travelling before being whisked away into a forested area in Kwara, where they were held captive. Their rescue followed a coordinated operation involving local security operatives and community vigilante groups, who tracked the kidnappers’ movements and secured the victims’ release.

Although details surrounding the operation remain limited, local sources said the intervention was carried out without significant harm to the victims. It remains unclear whether any ransom was paid or if arrests were made during the rescue effort.

The incident underscores the increasingly critical role played by community-led security outfits in complementing conventional law enforcement agencies, particularly in rural communities where kidnapping and banditry have become persistent security challenges.

Residents of border communities in Oyo and Kwara states have repeatedly raised concerns over the activities of criminal gangs exploiting vast forests and porous boundaries to carry out abductions before moving victims across state lines.

The latest rescue is expected to renew calls for stronger collaboration among security agencies, state governments, and local vigilante groups to improve intelligence sharing, strengthen border surveillance, and tackle the growing threat of kidnapping in the region.

Authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the incident as investigations continue.
