A prominent Nigerian legislator, Leke Abejide, has formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress following his expulsion from the African Democratic Congress.
Abejide, a two-term member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, confirmed his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ending months of internal disputes and political tension within the opposition party.
His move comes days after the ADC held its national convention on April 14, 2026, in Abuja, where he and several others were expelled over alleged anti-party activities.
The development marks a significant political realignment ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle, as Abejide joins the All Progressives Congress (APC), the country’s ruling party.
Party officials at the ADC convention had accused the expelled members of actions considered detrimental to party cohesion and discipline, a decision that has since triggered defections and reshaped internal dynamics within the party.
Abejide’s defection is expected to strengthen the APC’s position in his constituency, while further deepening cracks within the opposition ADC.
