Israel has pledged to support Nigeria’s efforts to curb rising insecurity linked to Islamic State-affiliated groups and other armed organisations operating across the country, Israel’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has said.
Speaking during an engagement with Nigerian officials, Freeman announced that Israel is prepared to provide intelligence sharing, strategic guidance and technical cooperation to strengthen Nigeria’s security response.
“Israel is committed to supporting the Nigerian government as it confronts growing insecurity caused by Islamic State affiliates and other terrorist groups,” Freeman said. “We will assist with intelligence and strategic support to help Nigeria protect its people.”
The pledge comes amid heightened concerns over attacks and instability in parts of northern Nigeria, where extremist factions have increased their activities in recent years.
Freeman noted that security collaboration between both nations has been long-standing but said Israel is now deepening its engagement in line with Nigeria’s current challenges.
“We believe that strengthened cooperation will make a meaningful difference,” he added.
Nigeria has welcomed international partnerships aimed at boosting counter-terrorism capacity, though authorities continue to stress that all foreign assistance must align with the country’s sovereignty and national priorities.
Analysts say Israel’s support could enhance Nigeria’s surveillance and intelligence-gathering capabilities, areas often highlighted as critical gaps in the nation’s security framework.
The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official statement on the latest offer, but diplomatic sources familiar with the discussions say further meetings are expected in the coming weeks.
