Iranian ballistic missiles have struck toward the Al‑Udeid Air Base, the United States’ largest military installation in the Middle East, in what appears to be a direct retaliation amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.

According to U.S. and Qatari officials, Iran launched a barrage of short‑ and medium‑range ballistic missiles late Monday toward the sprawling base near Doha, home to a key command hub for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and thousands of American troops. Most of the missiles were intercepted by Qatari and U.S. air defence systems, and no U.S. or civilian casualties have been reported so far.

The Iranian government claimed the strikes were retaliation for recent U.S. military action against Iranian nuclear facilities, saying the attacks matched the scale of American strikes and were aimed at what Tehran described as an “enemy military asset” rather than civilian areas.

Qatari authorities condemned the strikes as a “flagrant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and international law” while stressing that defensive measures successfully thwarted the threat to lives and infrastructure. Doha has said it reserves the right to respond if needed, though it affirmed its intention to avoid a broader regional military confrontation.

The incident marks one of the most serious direct engagements between Iranian forces and U.S. military personnel in years — underscoring growing volatility in the Gulf region and the potential for further escalation. International reactions poured in, with calls for restraint from world leaders and concerns that the conflict could widen if diplomatic channels fail to contain the crisis.

U.S. officials say they are assessing the situation and remain on high alert, with military assets throughout the region prepared for any contingency. The striking of Al‑Udeid underscores how swiftly regional hostilities can spill over into broader confrontation, even as diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes to avert a full‑scale conflict.
