In a move that goes against the recent directive from the Police Service Commission to retire senior police officers who have surpassed 35 years of service or are above 60 years old, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered these officers to remain in their positions.
According to a document obtained by Peoples Gazette, Mr. Egbetokun has instructed all police-related departments to halt any actions in response to the PSC directive until further notice.
The decision by the PSC to retire senior officers was based on a review of previous policies, with the aim of ensuring compliance with Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii). However, the commission clarified that it does not have the authority to determine the appointment or retirement of the Inspector General.
Mr. Egbetokun’s defiance of the PSC order has sparked controversy, as many Nigerians believe it goes against established laws. Despite facing legal challenges, the Inspector General’s appointment and extension of tenure have been defended as constitutional.
Born in September 1964, Mr. Egbetokun reached the age of 60 in September and was appointed Inspector General by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023.
