U.S. President Donald Trump has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his “decisive leadership” in the ongoing campaign against terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria.
In a personal letter addressed to President Tinubu, Trump expressed strong support for the Nigerian leader’s resolve to address the nation’s security challenges, specifically highlighting the protection of vulnerable groups.
The letter, dated July 6 and made public on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, underscores a deepening military and diplomatic alliance between Washington and Abuja.
‘A CRUCIAL PARTNERSHIP’
In the correspondence, Trump applauded Tinubu’s efforts to curb violence affecting various parts of the country, with a specific mention of the attacks on religious communities.
“I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people. I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities,” the letter reads.
“It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against these terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.”
Trump further described the U.S.-Nigeria relationship as “crucial” at a time of rising global conflict. He noted that both nations share a mutual goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms.
STRENGTHENED MILITARY TIES
The commendation comes on the heels of the U.S.-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap**, which has seen increased intelligence sharing and tactical support.
As part of this framework, Trump confirmed that the U.S. has deployed Special Operations Forces to equip the Armed Forces of Nigeria with elite training and tools.
“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces… to equip the brave men and women in the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland,” the U.S. President added.
This partnership recently led to a major breakthrough on May 16, when a coordinated operation in the Lake Chad area resulted in the death of ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki.
The U.S. President concluded the letter by stating he looks forward to “continued discussions” with Tinubu over the course of his presidency.
The statement follows a recent visit to Abuja by Frank Garcia, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, who pledged further cooperation in security and economic development.
