Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has said the state is fully prepared for the establishment of state police, describing it as a necessary step towards tackling growing security challenges and strengthening community-based policing across Nigeria.
Speaking in Kano, Governor Yusuf said the creation of state police would enable state governments to respond more effectively to local security threats, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure faster intervention in emergencies.
He argued that the country’s current centralised policing structure has become overstretched in the face of rising insecurity, making the case for decentralising law enforcement to better address the unique security needs of each state.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting ongoing national discussions on state policing, expressing confidence that the initiative would enhance public safety while promoting accountability and closer collaboration between security agencies and local communities.
Governor Yusuf also called on stakeholders to work towards developing a legal and operational framework that would guarantee professionalism, safeguard human rights, and prevent political interference in the operations of state police.
The debate over the establishment of state police has gained renewed momentum in recent months, with many state governments and security experts arguing that decentralised policing could significantly improve Nigeria’s capacity to combat crime and insecurity, while others have raised concerns over possible abuse by state authorities.
