Yola, Nigeria — Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has stirred fresh political debate after saying he could defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if that is the wish of his people.

Speaking amid growing rumours about his political future, Fintiri said consultations were still ongoing, stressing that any decision he takes would be guided by the will of the electorate.

“There are a lot of rumours about whether I will defect to the APC or not,” the governor said. “If that is the wish of my people, politics is all about people. I’m still consulting, and if my people say I should move, I will move.”

His remarks come as Nigeria’s political landscape continues to shift ahead of future elections, with defections becoming increasingly common across party lines.

Fintiri’s comments have sparked widespread reactions in Adamawa and beyond, with analysts saying any potential move by the governor could significantly reshape the balance of power in the North-East state and add momentum to the APC’s efforts to woo opposition governors.

For now, the governor insists no final decision has been taken, maintaining that his next political step will depend solely on the outcome of his consultations with stakeholders and residents of Adamawa.
