Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency in Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general elections, emphasizing that his intentions are both serious and well-considered.

In a recent interview, Al-Mustapha reflected on Nigeria’s democratic evolution, highlighting pressing issues such as security and electoral integrity. Having previously run in the 2019 and 2023 elections, he stated, “God willing, I only tested it before, but this time I’m committed to running.” He underscored the critical need for transparency in the electoral process, alleging that previous elections have been compromised by manipulation.

“To ensure fair elections, we have engaged with foreign nations to monitor Nigeria closely, particularly during the electoral period, as results have often been predetermined,” he asserted, pointing to a history of electoral rigging that has plagued the democratic process.

Al-Mustapha also made it clear that he would not align himself with any political coalition that conflicts with his principles. “If their ideology diverges from ours, I refuse to be part of any arrangement that would bring dishonor to our country,” he stated.

When questioned about supporting perennial political contender Atiku Abubakar, Al-Mustapha dismissed the notion, asserting that their political trajectories do not align.

The former Chief Security Officer to the late military ruler General Sani Abacha expressed his drive to tackle Nigeria’s challenges, including poverty, insecurity, and governance issues. He revealed that he has begun discussions with international observers to ensure heightened scrutiny of the upcoming elections.
