Gunmen have abducted six worshippers during a church service in southwestern Nigeria, police and local sources said, in the latest incident underscoring persistent insecurity in parts of the country.
The attack occurred in Ondo State, where assailants reportedly stormed a church premises and whisked away congregants at gunpoint. Witnesses said the gunmen arrived during a service, firing sporadically to disperse worshippers before abducting the victims.
Spokespersons for the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident and said security operatives had launched a manhunt to rescue those taken and apprehend the perpetrators.
“We have deployed tactical teams to the area and are working with local vigilantes to secure the safe return of the victims,” a police official said.
Ondo, like several states in Nigeria’s northwest and central regions, has witnessed a rise in kidnappings for ransom in recent years. Armed groups often target commuters, rural communities and places of worship, exploiting limited security presence in remote areas.
Local authorities urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, while community leaders called for enhanced surveillance around religious centres.
No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. The condition of the six worshippers remains unknown as of the time of reporting.
