Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has alleged that certain foreign countries are covertly financing terrorist activities in Nigeria, warning that the nation cannot overcome insecurity without confronting the “external forces” sustaining it.
Speaking during an interview shared by Politics Nigeria, Gumi argued that Nigeria’s prolonged battle with terrorism is not solely driven by local actors but is being fuelled by international interests seeking to destabilise the country for strategic and economic gains.
He claimed that the sophistication of weapons used by insurgents, alongside their expanding operational capacity, suggests support from powerful foreign networks. According to him, the scale of the conflict goes beyond what local groups could organise independently.
Gumi further urged the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic intelligence efforts, strengthen border control, and expose international collaborators enabling the flow of arms and funds to terrorist cells.
He stressed that lasting peace will remain elusive unless Nigeria addresses both the internal grievances driving radicalisation and the external sponsors allegedly profiting from chaos.
The Federal Government has yet to issue an official response to Gumi’s claims.
