The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has called for justice following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a news anchor and reporter with Arise News. Maduagwu was killed in an armed robbery attack at her home in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday.
The Guild, in a statement released on Tuesday, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Maduagwu’s untimely death as a significant blow to Nigerian journalism. “This is a loss not just to her family and colleagues, but to the entire journalism profession in Nigeria,” said NGE President Eze Anaba.
Somtochukwu Maduagwu was known for her dedication to the craft, her commitment to shedding light on pressing societal issues, and her passion for giving a voice to the voiceless. Her tragic passing highlights the growing insecurity faced by Nigerian citizens, particularly journalists, who are often exposed to the dangers of crime and violence.
“The death of this talented journalist underscores the perilous conditions that Nigerians face daily in their homes and communities,” Anaba continued. “It is a harsh reminder of the grave security challenges plaguing the nation.”
Authorities are investigating the incident, with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command pledging to bring the perpetrators to justice. Commissioner of Police Ajao Adewale condemned the act as “cruel and senseless” and extended condolences to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues, and the media community at large.
The NGE also voiced its concerns about the surge in violent crimes, particularly armed robbery, kidnapping, and banditry, which have escalated in recent years. “Insecurity has become a major threat not only to citizens but to professionals who, like Somtochukwu, play a crucial role in society,” said the statement.
The Guild has demanded immediate government action to address the underlying causes of insecurity and implement measures to safeguard citizens. “We call on the government to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are arrested and prosecuted. The safety of journalists, like all Nigerians, must be prioritized,” the NGE emphasized.
In its message of solidarity, the NGE expressed its unwavering support for Arise News and the entire journalism community.
“At this time of grief, we stand together with Somtochukwu’s family and colleagues. Her legacy will inspire future generations of journalists, even as we continue to fight against the growing threat of insecurity in our country,” the statement concluded.
